This plant from the Amazon invaded Florida in 1890. It grows aggressively and populations can double in size in 6-18 days, spreading by way of runners to completely clog waterways. Though the lavender flowers are attractive this plant degrades water quality and has altered native plant and animal communities.

Boaters and fishermen often inadvertently spread water hyacinth as they trailer their boats between freshwater lakes and rivers.
