With their waxy green leaves and large creamy-white blossoms, the classic southern magnolia tree is a symbol of the American deep south.
In Florida these large evergreen trees grow in shady areas with well-drained soils, along rives and lakes and around swamps. This is a popular ornamental tree and very large specimins are often seen in old port cities like Savannah and Charleston.
The spent flowers produce cone like structures full of large red seeds which are highly sought after by woodpeckers, squirrels and opossums.
