Formerly called the Louisiana heron, the tricolored heron is a relatively common medium-sized gray heron with yellow legs and a yellow, black-tipped bill.  In the breeding season, the legs are pink and the bill turns blue.  The underside of the neck is white.

They feed on fish in mangroves, swamps, and mud flats.
