The striped mud turtle is a small (5-inch long) turtle with a smooth domed top shell. The brownish black top shell is marked with three yellowish or light colored longitudinal lines. The head is small and dark with two stripes on either side of the face.

Striped mud turtles are found in shallow water habitats, including swamps, marshes, ponds and ditches. They are sometimes found on land, under leaves.
