Red-eared Slider

Red-eared Slider

This species is native to the Southeastern USA, but was introduced to Florida as part of the pet trade and is now well established and breeding in the state. It is a medium-sized turtle, easily recognized by its green head and a red stripe behind the eye.

Red-eared sliders are aquatic but leave the water to bask on sunny days. They are called sliders because they slide rapidly off logs and rocks when approached.
