Yellow-rumps or ‘butterbutts’ as some people call them, are the most common warbler visiting Florida in the winter; they typically arrive in October and often stay until April.
These warblers look a little like a sparrow, but they have a faint wash of yellow along their sides, a broken white-eye ring and a yellow patch on their head. Most characteristic of all, they show a yellow flash of feathers on their rump as they fly.
Yellow-rumps feed in mixed flocks, on insects and berries. The fruits of wax myrtle are a particularly popular winter food.
