The red-headed woodpecker has a crimson head and throat, white underparts, and a black and white back. Its bright white wing patches and rump flash conspicuously in flight. The typical call is a sudden, loud, and harsh ‘quirr’. These woodpeckers are often seen on wooden telephone and power poles.
